adoption process

  1. Fill out the application form at the bottom of this page. Your application will be reviewed and you will be contacted.

  2. If approved, there is a non-refundable deposit of $50 to join the waiting list.

    • Prices range between $300 to $450 based on the baby’s colours

    • Your deposit will be credited towards the total price

  3. When babies are around 4 weeks old, pictures of the babies will be taken and the waitlist will be contacted.

    • We will reach out to families one at a time, in the order of deposit

    • You will have 24 hours to choose a baby and pay the balance

    • If we do not receive a reply within 24 hours, we will move on to the next family

    • You can always opt to pass on the litter and keep your spot on the list

  4. Babies will be ready to go to their homes at 6-8 weeks

    • You will be contacted to arrange a pickup/delivery date

    • A reserved baby must be picked up before they are 10 weeks old (unless we have made an alternative arrangement beforehand)

    • After 10 weeks, we reserve the right to re-list the baby as available and you will be put back on the waitlist

  5. Day of pickup/delivery

    • Baby will be treated for mites and come with a two week supply of food

    • Bring a carrier and a snuggle sack!

We offer shipping within Canada, during the months of April to October.

Cost is $200 (HST included). Sorry, shipping to the U.S. is not available.

OUR POLICIES

sale policy

We do not sell to pet stores.

We do not sell to wholesalers.

We will not sell opposite sex pairs to the same household. If you are looking to get more than one baby, females are recommended as they are more likely to get along and can be housed together if they are from the same litter.

Adopters must be 18 years of age or older and will need to fill out an application before final approval. Minors under 18 must have their parent or legal guardian fill out the application form.

health policy

We guarantee that all hedgehogs sold by us are free from any known illnesses or defects, unless otherwise disclosed.

All buyers are expected to have their new hedgehog examined by a licensed veterinarian with hedgehog experience, within 5 business days from the date of pickup. Failing to do so will nullify our health guarantee.

Due to nutritional imbalances and low-quality fillers found in many commercial hedgehog-specific food, the use of such foods — including, but not limited to, Mazuri, Sunseed Vita Prima, Exotic Nutrition, Wild Harvest, and Vitakraft — will completely nullify and void all health guarantees.

We have a 6 month guarantee on all our hedgehogs:

  • If your hedgehog dies within 6 months of birth due to a congenital defect or a hereditary disease, we will offer a replacement at no charge

  • A necropsy report from a licensed veterinarian with hedgehog experience, stating that the hedgehog had a congenital/hereditary issue, must be provided

We have a lifetime guarantee against Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome (WHS) on all our hedgehogs:

  • In the rare event your hedgehog develops WHS, we will offer a replacement at no charge

  • WHS can only be diagnosed post-mortem. It requires tissue from the spinal cord and brain to be sent in for testing

  • A necropsy report from a licensed veterinarian with hedgehog and WHS experience, confirming that the hedgehog had WHS, must be provided

Death caused by, including but not limited to, negligence, improper care, improper nutrition, accidental injury, treatable diseases/illnesses, will void all health guarantees.

All hedgehogs purchased from Spiky Potatoes are welcome back at any time. No judgement!!

In the event that you feel that your hedgehog is no longer the right pet for you, please return them to us! We care for our hogs even after they have left our home. We are always happy to take a hedgehog back if needed, but please note we do not offer refunds.

We reserve the right to refuse a sale to any person at any time. This includes applicants who have not answered the questions fully or read through the policies. We ask for detailed answers and links for a reason! Hedgehogs are not a low maintenance pet - we want to see that research has been done beforehand.
